How Custom Coins Are Made: Learn How We Customize Challenge Coins for You

How Custom Coins Are Made

How custom coins are made depends on the type of coin you want us to make for you. But for our die-struck and enamel coins, our most popular custom coins, here's the process we go through to make them:

  1. Finalize the design for both sides of your coin.
  2. Make a mold of your design, cutting it out of industrial-grade steel using a specialized machine.
  3. Heat-treat the mold to make it extra-strong.
  4. Fit the mold into a stamping machine.
  5. Stamp your coins out of a plate of solid metal.
  6. Finish your coins using your chosen method. For antique coins, we add metal plating at your request and an antique finish. For sandblasted coins, we sandblast them to give the background a textured appearance and polish them so that the foreground is shiny. And for enamel coins, we fill in the spaces in the design with enamel.

However, we do have a couple of other styles that don't involve stamping your design into the metal, for which the process is a bit different. Once you've approved the design for your coin, we stamp out blank coins to form the base. Then:

  • If you want dimensionally printed coins, each coin is covered with a layer of epoxy, and then we 3D-print your design with brass on top.
  • If you order photodome coins, we print your design onto a coin, then cover it with a dome of epoxy for protection.
